The woman's baby girl was there in the van with them, Carlos told her.154 Diana remembers shaking. "This can't be right, he's having a bad dream." But then Carlos offered terrifying proof.155

He cut off Dahlia's toe, he told Diana, "for a, like, souvenir's sake. He asked me if I wanted to see it."156 No, Diana told Carlos in tears. She didn't want to see that.157

Carlos told Diana why he did it, too. His sister's husband Freddy was "messing around with that girl." By killing Dahlia, he stopped her from "causing problems on the marriage of his sister."158 Diana remembers Carlos saying that he carved an "F" where the lines of the "X" crossed.159

Although Diana said she didn't want to hear more, Carlos couldn't stop himself now that he'd gotten going—and, besides, he was proud of his work. He told her that he had killed Dahlia and meant to, but he also made sure he wouldn't get caught. He described how he used his undershorts to clean out the van—"fingerprints, steering wheel, lights, everything."160 He even cleaned Dahlia's fingernails, where she'd fought him.161

He left the van next to some bushes near the C.C. Egg Company off of Mexico Street and ran home. It was near dawn.162 His only mistake, he told Diana, was leaving his shorts behind.163

Lucky for Carlos, Olivia Escobedo—by "oversight"—never asked the crime lab to check the shorts for evidence of foul play.164 Carlos was good. He was crafty and sly. But he was also lucky.

One thing fixed in Diana's mind. "That little girl?," she asked Carlos.165 Carlos replied that the baby was asleep when he ran away.166 "He just . . . left them like that," Diana fretted, just "left them like that."167 Diana's own baby was asleep in the next room.168

Soon afterward, Diana left Hernandez. Whatever Dahlia had done to his sister, Carlos had done something worse. "That wasn't right to do," she recalled thinking. "I mean, how can you take a human being like that and—nobody's got that call."169

Back on her own, Diana struggled to keep the information to herself.170 Eventually, she contacted Detective Paul Rivera, a friend of her family's.171 What Rivera and his partner Eddie Garza told her after she recounted what she knew surprised her—made her shake again, as she did twenty years later when she described the events once more.172

"It was all true," the detectives assured her. Carlos hadn't made it up. "They'd been hunting him for a while." They had just needed more proof to catch him.173 Now they had it. Rivera and Garza took Diana's statement in April 1986. That was the last she heard from either of them.174 Until the private investigators came by her tidy home eighteen years later, no one else had expressed interest in what Carlos Hernandez had told her.

[Hernandez killed Dahlia] [b]ecause his sister, Paula, was having trouble with her husband. And her husband was the one that was messing around with that girl. They were dating or seeing each other. And she was causing problems on the marriage of his sister. And that was his way of getting them back together, his sister and her husband, by doing away with Dahlia, so that Dahlia wouldn't cause any more problems. But he took the wrong way—he shouldn't have done that—take matters on his own.").

I didn't want to hear about it. I guess he had to get it off his chest, off his mind, I don't know . . . . He said he cleaned out the van with his underwear, all fingerprints, steering wheel, lights, everything. And I said, 'That little girl?' She was asleep. He just left, left them like that, left them like that.").

Transcribed Videotape Interview with Diana Gomez, Girlfriend of Carlos Hernandez, in Corpus Christi, Texas (Dec. 7, 2004) at 03:12:06–03:12:50:

When I told him that, he said he knew it. He said I wasn't lying. It was all true. And I'm like, "Huh, it was for real?" And I got the shakes, then, I'm starting to shake right now, too, I don't like, I don't like shaking, this feeling . . . . [Paul Rivera told me] it was true, and they'd been hunting him for a while. They just need some proof, some evidence, evidence to catch him. And with the statement that I told them, I told them everything, detail by detail, what Carlos Hernandez had told me he had done to that girl Dahlia. That happened for real.

Nothing, I don't know. I never called to inform myself. I didn't want to know, really. After I heard [Detective] Paul Rivera going, 'Yes, we got him,' I thought, 'That's all he needed.' But I never followed up on the case.").
